Youth Risk Opportunity Program (YROP)
Risk Prevention & Opportunity
The Youth Risk Opportunity Program (YROP) is designed to reduce risk factors and increase protective factors for Somali youth ages 12-18. Our comprehensive approach addresses academic, social, and cultural needs.
Program Goals
- Improve academic performance
- Reduce gang involvement risk
- Prevent substance abuse
- Build leadership skills
- Strengthen cultural identity
- Develop life skills
- Increase family engagement
- Prepare for higher education
Daily Activities
Academic Support
- Homework assistance (3:30-4:30 PM)
- Tutoring in core subjects
- Computer lab access
- Study skills workshops
Enrichment Activities
- Cultural arts and crafts
- Sports and recreation
- Leadership development
- Community service projects
Mentorship Component
Each participant is paired with a trained mentor who provides:
- One-on-one guidance and support
- Academic and career counseling
- Cultural identity reinforcement
- Conflict resolution skills
- Goal setting and achievement planning
Program Schedule
After School Program:
Monday - Friday, 3:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Summer Program:
Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
June - August
Weekend Activities:
Saturdays, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Cultural Events:
Monthly community gatherings
Eligibility & Requirements
- Ages 12-18 years old
- Enrolled in middle or high school
- Somali or East African heritage preferred
- Commitment to regular attendance
- Parent/guardian consent required
Cost: Free for all participants
Transportation: Limited bus service available
