Youth Risk Opportunity Program (YROP)

Risk Prevention & Opportunity

The Youth Risk Opportunity Program (YROP) is designed to reduce risk factors and increase protective factors for Somali youth ages 12-18. Our comprehensive approach addresses academic, social, and cultural needs.

Program Goals
  • Improve academic performance
  • Reduce gang involvement risk
  • Prevent substance abuse
  • Build leadership skills
  • Strengthen cultural identity
  • Develop life skills
  • Increase family engagement
  • Prepare for higher education

Daily Activities

Academic Support
  • Homework assistance (3:30-4:30 PM)
  • Tutoring in core subjects
  • Computer lab access
  • Study skills workshops
Enrichment Activities
  • Cultural arts and crafts
  • Sports and recreation
  • Leadership development
  • Community service projects

Mentorship Component

Each participant is paired with a trained mentor who provides:

  • One-on-one guidance and support
  • Academic and career counseling
  • Cultural identity reinforcement
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Goal setting and achievement planning
Program Schedule

After School Program:
Monday - Friday, 3:30 PM - 6:00 PM

Summer Program:
Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
June - August

Weekend Activities:
Saturdays, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Cultural Events:
Monthly community gatherings

Eligibility & Requirements
  • Ages 12-18 years old
  • Enrolled in middle or high school
  • Somali or East African heritage preferred
  • Commitment to regular attendance
  • Parent/guardian consent required

Cost: Free for all participants
Transportation: Limited bus service available
